Recently, Chuandong Shipyard has initiated a 40-day technical upgrade on its 74-meter pontoon located in the harbor. This renovation aims to significantly enhance the buoyancy of the pontoon, increasing it from 1,800 tons to 2,500 tons. This improvement is crucial for supporting the construction of the upcoming 10,000-ton ship, ensuring greater stability and safety during the launching process.
The pontoon plays a vital role in the ship-launching operations at Chuandong Plant. It serves as a key component in the system that allows ships to be safely towed and maneuvered during the launch. Alongside the inclined frame, it forms an essential part of the complete ship-launching infrastructure. Originally built in the 1970s, the 74-meter-long and 16-meter-wide pontoon was designed for smaller vessels, but with the factory’s recent expansion, the demand for larger ships has grown significantly.
Over the years, the factory has transitioned from producing 3,000-ton ships to now handling 10,000-ton vessels. This shift has exposed the limitations of the old pontoon, which can no longer support the increased weight and size of modern ships. As a result, the decision was made to modernize the existing structure to meet current and future production needs.
As part of the transformation, the width of the pontoon will be expanded from 16 meters to 21 meters, and its lifting capacity will be upgraded to 2,500 tons. In addition, the plant will also reconfigure the skid system in the dry dock area to better accommodate the movement and steering of large 10,000-ton ships within the indoor shipyard. These upgrades are expected to improve efficiency, reduce risks, and support the long-term growth of the shipyard.
