Bayer MaterialScience made a strong impression at the 2007 China International Coatings Show, showcasing its leadership in environmentally friendly waterborne coatings. The event, held in Shanghai from November 21st to 23rd, provided an excellent platform for the company’s Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants (CAS) business unit to demonstrate cutting-edge innovations in coating technology. A key highlight of the exhibition was the Audi TT sports car painted with Bayer’s advanced water-based paint, emphasizing the company's commitment to sustainable solutions. Dr. Joachim Wolff, President of the CAS Business Global, highlighted that China's growing environmental awareness has significantly increased demand for eco-friendly products. He emphasized that waterborne polyurethane coatings are a key replacement for traditional materials, as they rely mainly on water as a solvent, greatly reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. This aligns with Bayer’s global mission to "enlive life with innovative technology" by delivering sustainable solutions. According to Daniel Meyer, Vice President of Coatings Business Asia Pacific, global demand for waterborne coatings is rising by about 5% annually, and China is expected to see even stronger growth. Mr. Mai noted that both consumers and industries are increasingly turning to water-based paints due to their health benefits and performance advantages. For instance, waterborne coatings offer better adhesion, faster drying times, and are non-flammable, making them ideal for various applications. To meet rising demand, Bayer is expanding its production capacity in Shanghai. A new environmentally friendly waterborne polyurethane dispersion plant will start operations in mid-2008, with an annual output of 20,000 tons. Additionally, the company has increased production capacities for key raw materials like Desmodur® L and Desmodur® IL, ensuring reliable supply to customers in the region. Bayer’s “Leading the Way” strategy also includes continuous innovation in areas such as self-healing coatings, medical coatings, and nano-mixed materials. The company has invested heavily in the Shanghai Polymer Research and Development Center (PRDC), which provides comprehensive support for coating formulation, application, and testing. In addition to technical advancements, Bayer is committed to supporting the local coatings industry through educational initiatives. Collaborations with institutions like CEIBS have led to training seminars, where industry experts and academics share insights on global trends and business strategies. Similar programs were held at Tsinghua University and Peking University, reinforcing Bayer’s dedication to knowledge sharing and long-term partnerships. Bayer also supported the Beijing National Aquatics Center (Water Cube) by supplying solvent-free waterborne polyurethane coatings for the Green Olympics initiative. The project involved not only material supply but also design and on-site supervision, highlighting the company’s full-service approach. To better serve Chinese customers, Bayer launched a Chinese version of its CAS website, offering detailed information on product applications, regional production capabilities, and sales networks. As Dr. Hu stated, this effort reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to leading the way in innovation and customer service. Bayer MaterialScience remains a global leader in polymer production, with over 14,900 employees worldwide and a strong focus on high-tech materials for industries such as automotive, electronics, construction, and sports. The company continues to drive sustainability and technological advancement in the coatings sector.
