From June 8 to June 12, 2006, the 8th Michelin Bibendum Challenge took place in Paris, drawing over 2,500 attendees from around the globe, including top automotive manufacturers and fuel suppliers. A total of 150 eco-friendly vehicles, powered by a variety of fuels, competed in the event. Among them, Mercedes-Benz's newly designed hydrogen-powered cars stood out, capturing significant attention. Additionally, the fuel cell car "Exceeding III," showcased earlier in Shanghai, China, earned an impressive score of 4 A in the competition and became one of the key highlights of the challenge. Toyota Hybrid Leads the Way As the world moves toward a more sustainable future, tomorrow’s road mobility will face energy challenges, the need for advanced technologies to support urbanization, and the importance of road safety. These were the central themes of this year’s Bibendum Challenge. In terms of future fuel trends, organizers recognized the efforts of governments worldwide in promoting cleaner transportation. For example, Brazil has made great strides in biofuel use, while Europe has focused on natural gas. In the U.S., California has been at the forefront of hydrogen research, and the Chinese government’s investment in electric vehicles was also acknowledged. Officials noted that these initiatives represent exciting progress in global emission reduction. While hydrogen is seen as the most promising clean fuel for the future, its widespread adoption may still take several decades due to technical and economic challenges. In the meantime, hybrid vehicles remain a practical and widely adoptable solution. Toyota has been successful in reducing costs and making hybrid technology more accessible to consumers, placing it at the forefront of this growing market. China’s Fuel Cell Vehicles Make Waves One of the most anticipated events during the challenge was the car rally held on June 11. Over 150 participating vehicles set off from CERAM, the main venue in Paris, and after covering 132 kilometers, they arrived in the heart of the city. At the end of the route, guests such as Mr. Serge Dassault, President of Dassault Aviation, Michel Dumont, Mayor of the 7th District of Paris, and the Chinese Ambassador to France welcomed the drivers. Each vehicle passed through the Bibendum arch, and participants took photos with the iconic Bibendum character under the tower—marking the highlight of the event. Three Chinese fuel cell vehicles became the focus of media attention during the challenge. These included fuel cell cars developed by China Guoxin and the “Exceeding III” model from Shanghai. The “Exceeding III” was a joint project between Tongji University and SAIC, based on a Santana platform. It features low noise levels and clean emissions, with many performance metrics reaching international standards. According to the project’s technical team, the current focus is on cost reduction, aiming to bring the total vehicle price down to approximately 350,000 yuan by 2012. The company plans to start small-scale production in 2008, with the potential for the fuel cell technology to be integrated into SAIC Rover models. This time, the “Exceeding III” scored an A-grade (the highest) in four key tests: noise, emissions, fuel efficiency, and overall performance, marking a proud achievement for Chinese automakers.
