In response to a growing problem of streetlight cable theft, the city has introduced a new anti-theft alarm system to protect its infrastructure. According to Liu Yuhui, director of the Street Lamp Management Office, the system works by triggering an alert on mobile devices when someone attempts to tamper with the cables. "If a stolen person opens the electric door at the bottom of the pole and touches the cable, an alarm from the cable alarm system will be displayed on our mobile phone, along with the specific location of the incident," Liu explained to reporters.
This year, several sections of the capital have been equipped with these advanced alarm systems in an effort to curb the rising number of theft cases. Since 2004, the issue has become increasingly severe, with Urumqi alone reporting 51 incidents of streetlight cable theft as of August, resulting in the loss of 7,230 meters of cable valued at nearly 400,000 yuan.
Liu shared a recent success story: "The cable anti-theft alarm system on Lei Yu Shan Road recently played a crucial role. A thief was in the process of stealing the cable when the alarm was triggered, sending an alert to our staff’s phones. They rushed to the scene and arrived just in time to catch the suspects, who fled upon seeing the patrol car."
To further enhance security, the City Street Lamp Management Office has partnered with local authorities to recruit taxi drivers as volunteer supervisors. These volunteers are offered material incentives to help monitor the streets. Members of the public are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity. If they spot any issues, they can directly call the hotline at 3667067 to report or raise an alarm.
With these combined efforts, officials hope to significantly reduce the number of thefts and protect the city's vital infrastructure. The implementation of technology and community involvement marks a proactive step in addressing this persistent challenge.
