Wanxiang Group, China's largest auto parts manufacturer, has recently signed an agreement with the Chongqing Airport Industrial Park Management Committee to invest RMB 600 million in a new auto parts R&D and production facility within the industrial park. The project is expected to see total investment reach up to 1.5 billion yuan in the coming years. This move marks a significant step in expanding Wanxiang's manufacturing footprint in western China. According to Wen Ronggang, deputy director of the Airport Industrial Park Administrative Committee, Wanxiang will focus on producing automobile chassis, suspension modules, and brake systems in Chongqing. In the second phase of the project, the company aims to establish what will be the world’s largest auto parts and components manufacturing base, partnering with global industry leaders such as Bosch. A joint project with Bosch on the cutting-edge automotive CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) technology has already achieved a production value of 3 billion yuan, highlighting the company’s strong technical capabilities and market potential. Chongqing is home to major automakers like Changan, Qingling, and SAIC Iveco Hongyan, and has developed a comprehensive automotive production system that includes microcars, passenger vehicles, and both light and heavy commercial vehicles. However, the rapid growth of the整车 (whole vehicle) industry has exposed a growing imbalance: while the auto industry is booming, the development of local auto parts suppliers has lagged behind. Many local parts companies face challenges such as high costs and lower quality, which limits their competitiveness compared to manufacturers in eastern coastal regions. To address this gap, more auto parts companies from the east have started to relocate or expand into Chongqing, seeking to support the fast-growing automotive and motorcycle industries in the region and beyond. According to Wen Ronggang, the Airport Industrial Park currently hosts around 100 auto parts companies, covering a wide range of products such as automotive interiors, body panels, chassis components, frames, and car audio systems. These companies are gradually building a more complete and robust auto parts supply chain, supporting the long-term development of the regional automotive sector.
