On November 20, a signing ceremony was held in Xi'an to mark the establishment of the Shaanxi Coal Chemical Engineering Center and the Methanol and Olefins Engineering Laboratory. These initiatives were jointly organized by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Shaanxi Coal Chemical Industry Group. This collaboration represents the second major technical partnership between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shaanxi Provincial Government in the coal chemical industry sector.
Under the agreement, the Shaanxi Coal Chemical Engineering Technology Center will be funded with 70 million yuan by Shaanxi Coal Chemical Industry Group, which will hold a 55% stake. The Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics will own the remaining 45%. Meanwhile, the Methanol-to-Olefins Engineering Laboratory will be based on the technical team from the Dalian Institute, with Shaanxi Coal Chemical Industry Group investing 30 million yuan and receiving 50% of the revenue, along with priority access to the technology.
Once established, the two institutions will immediately launch key technology development projects in the coal chemical industry, including methanol-to-propylene (MTP) processes. They also aim to build a national-level coal chemical technology center and engineering laboratory as soon as possible.
This marks the second significant collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shaanxi Provincial Government in the coal chemical field. Last August, Shaanxi Province, through the Shaanxi Coal Chemical Group, invested nearly 100 million yuan in a joint project with the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Co., Ltd. Together, they developed China's first independently owned industrial technology for producing low-carbon olefins from methanol—DMTO. The project successfully operated a 10,000-ton demonstration plant in Hua County, Shaanxi, achieving world-leading technical performance. This breakthrough laid a solid foundation for the future development of China's coal chemical industry.
