The Chicago Tribune is reporting this morning that a 61-year-old Chicago firefighter has died following a cardiac arrest just hours after responding to a fire on the South Side. The veteran firefighter, who had served for 18 years, was taken to the hospital after experiencing severe chest pain and shortness of breath while cleaning equipment at his station. According to officials from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the firefighter was part of the Chicago Fire Department and was stationed at Engine 121 in the 1700 block of West 95th Street. He was called to a kitchen fire around 10 p.m. on Sunday in the 1500 block of West 99th Street. After returning to his station, he began feeling unwell and was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where he later went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 11:21 p.m. His name has not been released at this time, as authorities are in the process of notifying his family.
