Excerpts from the JournalStandard.com: Stockton Fire Chief Randy Baysinger expressed confidence in his department's ability to respond to emergencies, even after a fire severely damaged their station on Thursday. Despite the destruction, the team remains operational and committed to serving the community. The early morning blaze caused significant damage to the firehouse, including six fire trucks, a trailer, and an ATV. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and officials are assessing whether the equipment can be repaired or needs to be replaced. "Within two hours of the fire, we had Emergency Equipment from neighboring communities ready to go," Baysinger said. "We want the people of Stockton to know we're still here. We're damaged, but thanks to the support of others, we have what we need to keep them safe." Local fire departments from German Valley, Shannon, and Scales Mound have lent eight spare vehicles and equipment to the 30 volunteers in Stockton. The gear is currently stored in a nearby building. Additional donations came from Davis, Lena, Mount Morris, Pearl City, and Polo. Baysinger also mentioned that he has received outreach from at least 50 other fire departments across the Midwest, offering assistance and resources. "In our line of work, you don’t hear a lot of thanks, and sometimes it feels like the public takes us for granted," Baysinger said. "But this situation shows just how wrong that assumption is. People are reaching out from over 100 miles away to help. It really means a lot to me and the team." The support hasn't stopped there. On the day of the fire, Rick Barkau, dealer principal of Barkau Automotive, presented Baysinger with a check. In March, his dealership will donate $100 to the Stockton Fire Department for every car sold, with Chrysler matching the contribution for every Chrysler vehicle sold. "What really struck me was seeing how dedicated these volunteers are to the community," Barkau said. "I’m hoping to give them a $7,500 check by next month. I looked at our monthly sales and thought, 'This is what we can do for a department that puts their lives on the line every day.' I was really upset when I saw the fire, and I wanted to do something." In addition, the Warren Fire Department plans to donate money raised from their recent steak fry to the Stockton Fire Department. The event took place on Saturday, and they ended up selling more than 325 steaks. Fire Chief Jeff Ege is still counting the total funds raised.
