Excerpts from wfmz.com:

WEST PENN TWP., Pa. – Two volunteer firefighters lost their lives after responding to a smoky house fire in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County, on Wednesday afternoon, according to the coroner.

Marvin Gruber, 59, and Zachary Paris, 36, died after being called to a fire at the 1100 block of Clamtown Road, near Tamaqua. Both were part of the rescue efforts when they were trapped inside the burning home.

Paris was the assistant fire chief of the New Tripoli Fire Company in Lehigh County, while Gruber served as an assistant chief with the Northampton Community College Department of Public Safety. Their deaths have left a deep impact on their respective communities.

A local firefighters’ union in Frederick County, Maryland, shared details about Paris, noting that he joined the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service in February 2022 and graduated in September. He is survived by his wife and two young daughters.

The firefighters were searching for a person reported to be trapped inside the home when multiple mayday calls were made. They were eventually pulled from the structure and taken to the hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

A third individual was found on the property behind the house, but authorities have not yet revealed how that person died or their identity. The case remains under investigation.

“Along with the house fire, there was a body located on this property, behind the house,” said Trooper David Beohm of the Pennsylvania State Police. “That is still an active investigation.”

Police also mentioned that two people lived in the home, but they are no longer present. However, their current status has not been disclosed.

Fire crews from three counties responded to the blaze, which was classified as a three-alarm fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and investigators are working to determine what led to the tragic incident.
