Double LODD in Schuylkill County, PA 12-7-22

WEST PENN TWP., Pa. – Two volunteer firefighters lost their lives after responding to a smoky house fire in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County, on Wednesday afternoon, according to the coroner.

Marvin Gruber, 59, and Zachary Paris, 36, were called to a fire at the 1100 block of Clamtown Road, near Tamaqua. Both died while trying to rescue a person reported trapped inside the burning home.

Paris, who was the assistant fire chief of the New Tripoli Fire Company in Lehigh County, had recently joined the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service in February 2022 and graduated in September. He leaves behind his wife and two young daughters. Gruber served as an assistant chief in the Northampton Community College Department of Public Safety.

During the operation, multiple mayday calls were made as firefighters were trapped on the second floor. A rapid intervention team (RIT) was deployed and successfully rescued the two men, who were taken to St. Luke’s Miners Hospital but later succumbed to their injuries.

A third individual was found on the property behind the house, but authorities have not yet confirmed how that person died or their identity. The homeowner, along with another occupant, is no longer at the scene, though no details about their condition have been released.

Fire crews from three counties responded to the three-alarm blaze, which remains under investigation. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Audio House Fire Firefighter Mayday Schuylkill county 12/7/22 – Fire crews were called to the 1100 block of Clamtown Road, Route 443, in West Penn Township around 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday for a single-family home fire with reports of someone trapped inside. An hour into the incident, mayday calls were made from firefighters who had become trapped on the second floor. The RIT team rushed in and pulled both firefighters out, transporting them to St. Luke’s Miners Hospital. Tragically, both died shortly after arriving. They were from the New Tripoli Fire Company. My thoughts and prayers go out to their families and all the brave firefighters involved.

Frederick County FF Zachary Paris

It's with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Frederick County Firefighter Zachary Paris. He was tragically killed while fighting a house fire in Schuylkill County, PA, alongside his fellow firefighters from the New Tripoli Fire Company.

Zachary joined the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service on February 28, 2022, as part of Recruit Class 32. He graduated on September 10, 2022, and was assigned to Green Valley Fire Station as a member of C Shift. He leaves behind his wife and two young daughters.

We ask that you keep Zachary’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Rest in peace, brother. We will carry on in your honor.
