On Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2023, Palatine firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the third floor of an apartment building located at 12 E Dundee Quarter. Upon arrival, Palatine police officers observed smoke and then flames emerging from the roof, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a Code 4 working fire.
Palatine crews immediately launched an interior attack, deploying two lines on the third floor while conducting searches throughout the building. However, due to the rapid spread of fire in the mansard roof and deteriorating conditions, firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure and shift to a defensive strategy. During the evacuation, a firefighter on a balcony called for help after being unable to exit through the interior. He successfully descended a ground ladder to safety.
The fire managed to bypass the fire wall and spread into the adjacent building, causing significant damage to its roof and third floor. Multiple structural collapses occurred in the original building, adding to the severity of the situation.
In response, units from Palatine Tower 85, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Arlington Heights Tower 1 deployed master streams to help control the blaze. Several other area departments also arrived on scene, including Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Lake Zurich, Barrington, Inverness, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. This list is not exhaustive, as many more units may have been involved.
The incident highlights the complexity of urban fires, especially in structures with unique features like mansard roofs. Firefighters faced challenging conditions, requiring quick decision-making and coordination among multiple agencies. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though the damage was extensive. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
