On Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2023, Palatine firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the third floor of an apartment building located at 12 E. Dundee Quarter. As the situation unfolded, local police officers also arrived and reported seeing smoke and flames emerging from the roof. The incident was quickly escalated to a Code 4 working fire, indicating a serious and rapidly spreading blaze.
Palatine fire crews launched an interior attack with two hoselines on the third floor, conducting searches throughout the building. However, due to the intense volume of fire overhead and in the mansard roof, along with deteriorating conditions inside, firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure and shift to a defensive strategy. During the evacuation, a firefighter on a balcony called for help after being unable to exit through the interior. Fortunately, he managed to descend a ground ladder and was safely rescued.
The fire spread past the fire wall and eventually reached the adjacent building, causing significant damage to its roof and third floor. Multiple structural collapses occurred in the original building, raising concerns about the stability of the area. To contain the fire, Palatine Tower 85, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Arlington Heights Tower 1 deployed master streams, helping to control the flames from a distance.
Several other departments from the surrounding area were also on the scene, including units from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Lake Zurich, Barrington, Inverness, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. It's likely that this list does not include every agency that assisted in the response.
Photos by Larry Shapiro capture the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding crews. Despite the challenges, the coordinated response helped prevent further loss of life and property. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
