Here's a message from Art Zern: The Sycamore Fire Department responded to a General Alarm call just before midnight on Saturday, September 5, 2020, for a structure fire. Engine 1 and Chief 3 arrived to find a two-story duplex engulfed in heavy flames on the C and D sides, with fire spreading to both floors and the attic. E-1 deployed a 2½-inch line to the C/D corner, effectively knocking down the main fire that had started on the deck and spread through the vinyl siding. E-2 arrived next and helped secure water supply while extending a second line to the second floor for full extinguishment and to remove walls and ceilings. Fortunately, all occupants had already evacuated before the crews arrived. Chief 3 coordinated the response since several General Alarm units were either delayed or unavailable. The efforts of E-1 and E-2 were commendable. DeKalb T-1 handled roof operations, while other units conducted extensive overhaul, checked the adjacent unit for any signs of extension, and managed RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) duties. A big thank you to our mutual aid partners for their support. This is the official press release about the fire that occurred early Sunday morning: On Saturday, September 5, 2020, around 11:58 PM, the Sycamore Fire Department was called to 660 Hill Street for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, the first responding units found heavy fire coming from the rear deck area of a residential building, which had extended vertically into the attic. Crews initially attacked the fire from the exterior using a large 2½-inch hand line. Once the fire was knocked down, they moved in with 1¾-inch lines for an aggressive interior attack and began a primary search for any remaining occupants. The crews quickly brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes and remained on scene for an additional hour and a half to perform overhaul and check for any signs of fire extension. The Sycamore Fire Department received assistance from DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Malta, Kirkland, Somonauk, Maple Park, and Burlington fire departments, as well as the Sycamore Police Department, ComEd, and NICOR. No one was injured, and the building suffered significant damage. The roof structure was severely compromised, the second floor was heavily damaged by heat, smoke, and water, and the first floor and basement also sustained considerable damage. The estimated loss is around $150,000, and the building is now uninhabitable. All residents have been relocated. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time, pending further investigation.
