This message is from Art Zern: The Sycamore Fire Department responded to a General Alarm call just before midnight on Saturday, September 5th, 2020, for a structure fire. Engine 1 and Chief 3 arrived to find a two-story duplex engulfed in heavy fire on the C and D sides, with flames spreading to both floors and the attic. E-1 quickly deployed a 2½-inch line to the C/D corner to tackle the main fire that had started on the deck and spread through the vinyl siding. E-2 arrived shortly after and helped secure water supply while extending a second line to the second floor for full extinguishment and to pull walls and ceilings for better access. All occupants had safely evacuated before the crews arrived. Chief 3 coordinated the response as several General Alarm units were delayed or unavailable. The efforts of E-1 and E-2 were crucial in quickly bringing the fire under control. DeKalb T-1 handled roof operations, while other units conducted extensive overhaul, checked the adjacent unit for possible extension, and performed RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) duties. A big thank you goes out to all our mutual aid partners who supported the operation. This is the official press release from the early Sunday morning fire: On Saturday, September 5, 2020, around 11:58 PM, the Sycamore Fire Department was called to 660 Hill Street for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, the first responding units found heavy fire coming from the rear deck area of a residential building, which had extended vertically into the attic. Crews initially attacked the fire from the exterior using a large 2½-inch handline. Once the fire was knocked down, they launched an aggressive interior attack with 1¾-inch lines and began a primary search for any occupants. The fire was quickly controlled within 30 minutes, and crews remained on the scene for another hour and a half to perform overhaul and check for any signs of fire extension. The Sycamore Fire Department received assistance from DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Malta, Kirkland, Somonauk, Maple Park, and Burlington fire departments. Additional support came from the Sycamore Police Department, ComEd, and NICOR. No one was injured among the residents or firefighters. The roof structure suffered severe damage from heat and flames. The second floor was heavily damaged due to heat, smoke, and water. The first floor and basement also sustained damage from smoke and water. The estimated loss from the fire is approximately $150,000. The building is not habitable, and all residents have been relocated. The cause of the fire is currently undetermined and is under investigation.
