Excerpts taken from abcnews.go.com highlight a recent recall issued by Ford concerning nearly 43,000 small SUVs due to a potential issue where gasoline may leak from the fuel injectors and seep onto hot engine parts, thereby increasing the risk of fires. However, the proposed solution in this recall does not involve fixing the actual fuel leaks.
This recall specifically targets certain models of the Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years, along with Escape SUVs from 2022, all of which come equipped with 1.5-liter engines. According to documents submitted to U.S. safety regulators, Ford has identified that the fuel injectors might crack, leading to the accumulation of gasoline or its vapors around potential ignition sources, which could ignite fires.
To address the issue, dealers will be installing a tube designed to redirect leaking gasoline away from the hot engine surfaces and down towards the ground beneath the vehicle. Additionally, they will update the engine control software to monitor for any drop in fuel injection system pressure. In such cases, the software will deactivate the high-pressure fuel pump, reduce engine performance, and lower the temperature within the engine bay. These updates were detailed in documents published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website on Wednesday.
Vehicle owners were scheduled to receive notification via mail beginning April 1st. Ford has reported five instances of under-hood fires and 14 cases requiring warranty replacements of fuel injectors, though no accidents or injuries related to these issues have been documented.
In an email response, Ford stated that it would not replace the fuel injectors since it believes the current recall measures will effectively prevent further failures and ensure customer safety. The new software will also activate a dashboard warning light, allowing drivers to safely pull over, stop their vehicles, and seek assistance. NHTSA documents indicate that this problem occurs in approximately 1% of the affected SUVs.
Furthermore, Ford announced that it will extend warranty coverage for cracked fuel injectors, ensuring that customers experiencing this problem will receive replacements. Repairs are currently available, and more information regarding the extended warranty will be released in June.
This recall serves as an extension of a previous recall conducted in 2022 for the identical issue. The repair method has already undergone testing on vehicles involved in the earlier recall, and Ford has confirmed it is unaware of any complications arising from the fix.
Additionally, Ford stated it does not recommend parking these SUVs exclusively outdoors, as there is no evidence suggesting fires occur when the vehicles are stationary with the engines turned off.
Historically, NHTSA has mentioned it lacks the legal power to approve recall solutions beforehand. Nevertheless, in a statement made on Wednesday, the agency noted it would "closely monitor their effectiveness through field data." For those with queries, the agency advised reaching out to local dealerships or directly contacting Ford.
For completeness, it's worth noting that while this recall aims to mitigate risks, the automotive industry continues to evolve rapidly, with advancements in technology and materials constantly improving vehicle safety standards.
