Ford has announced a recall for approximately 43,000 small SUVs due to potential fuel leaks from the fuel injectors, which could seep onto hot engine components, thereby heightening the risk of fires. However, the current recall fix doesn't involve directly repairing the fuel leaks.

This recall applies to specific models of the Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years, along with Escape SUVs from 2022, all of which are equipped with 1.5-liter engines. According to documents submitted by Ford to U.S. safety regulators, cracks in the fuel injectors may lead to gasoline or its vapors pooling near ignition sources, potentially causing fires.

Dealers will implement a solution by installing a tube designed to reroute gasoline away from hot surfaces and direct it toward the ground beneath the vehicle. Additionally, they will update the engine control software to monitor any drops in fuel injection system pressure. In the event such a pressure drop occurs, the software will deactivate the high-pressure fuel pump, reduce engine performance, and lower temperatures within the engine bay, as per documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website on Wednesday.

Owners were supposed to receive notification letters starting April 1st.

Ford stated in its documents that it has received reports of five engine compartment fires and 14 instances of fuel injector replacements under warranty, yet there have been no incidents of accidents or injuries reported.

In an email, Ford mentioned that it won't replace the fuel injectors since it believes the recall measures will stop further failures and safeguard customers. The updated software will also activate a dashboard warning light, enabling drivers to pull over safely, stop their vehicles, and arrange for maintenance. NHTSA documents reveal that this issue occurs in roughly 1% of the affected SUVs.

Ford has also decided to extend warranty coverage for cracked fuel injectors, ensuring that owners experiencing this issue will receive replacements. Repairs are already available, and more details regarding the extended warranty will be disclosed in June.

This recall extends from a similar issue identified in a 2022 recall. The repair method has been previously tested on vehicles included in the earlier recall, and Ford claims it hasn't encountered any complications so far.

Ford emphasized that it doesn't recommend keeping the SUVs parked exclusively outdoors, as there's no evidence suggesting fires occur when the vehicles are stationary with the engines turned off.

In the past, NHTSA mentioned that it lacks the legal authority to approve recall fixes beforehand. However, the agency stated on Wednesday that it would "closely monitor their effectiveness using field data." The agency advised owners with queries to reach out to their dealerships or contact Ford directly.

As of now, Ford remains committed to addressing this issue swiftly and transparently, ensuring customer safety while implementing long-term solutions.
