Late Sunday evening (January 5, 2020), the Buffalo Grove Fire Department received an emergency call regarding a fire at the Dengeos Restaurant located at 195 West Dundee Road. According to reports from local police officers, thick plumes of smoke were observed billowing outside the building, drifting across the road. Upon arrival, firefighters noticed visible flames licking the trim on the C-D corner of the structure, with smoke permeating the interior. The incident commander quickly escalated the response to a Code 4, calling in additional resources. Firefighting operations commenced immediately. Teams worked diligently to ventilate the roof, employing cutting tools to remove sections of the damaged siding. Their efforts revealed significant charring along the corner of the building, indicating that the fire had spread more extensively than initially anticipated. It was later determined that the fire likely originated due to a discarded cigarette, highlighting the potential dangers posed by seemingly harmless debris. The Buffalo Grove Fire Department deployed a robust array of equipment and personnel to manage the situation. On-scene assets included Quint 25, Engine 26, Engine 27, Ambulance 25, Ambulance 26, Battalion 4, Car 208, and the Deputy Chief. Several neighboring departments also contributed their support, sending reinforcements such as Arlington Heights’ Engine 4, Ambulance 4, and Battalion 1; Long Grove’s Squad 55 and Battalion 55; Palatine’s Engine 82 and Ambulance 82; Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD’s Squad 51; Prospect Heights’ Engine 39; and ambulances from both Lake Forest and the Nunda Rural FPD. These collaborative efforts were crucial in containing the blaze before it could cause further damage. Images captured by photographer Larry Shapiro vividly illustrate the intensity of the firefighting operation. One photograph shows firefighters skillfully wielding a chainsaw to cut into the roof, while another captures a team using specialized tools to access the affected areas. These images underscore the dedication and professionalism displayed by all involved. The swift and coordinated response undoubtedly prevented a catastrophic outcome. However, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to fire safety. Even small, seemingly innocuous actions—like improperly disposing of cigarettes—can have severe consequences if not handled responsibly. As investigations continue, residents and business owners are reminded to remain cautious and prepared. For now, the community can take solace in knowing that their first responders acted swiftly and effectively to protect lives and property.
