From Eric Haak's report on the Still & Box Alarm fire that occurred yesterday on Blue Island Avenue: Around 11:50 AM on Sunday, Engine 23 was the first to respond, reporting visible smoke coming from the roof of a two-story, 400 x 100-foot commercial building located just off the intersection of Blue Island and Damen. The structure is part of the extensive production complex for Hofmeister Hams. By noon, the fire had been declared a working incident by the 4th Battalion. Initial firefighting efforts focused on deploying a hose line on the roof alongside a 2 1/2-inch line that was sent inside. The fire was brought under control relatively swiftly. The primary units involved in extinguishing the blaze included Engine 23 and Tower Ladder 5, Engine 18, and Truck 8, with Battalion 2 and Truck 32 acting as Rapid Intervention Teams (RIT). I didn’t observe any of the box engines being utilized as they were positioned further down on Cermak Road. There were roofers present at the site, but no definitive cause for the fire has been confirmed yet. The first image below was captured roughly ten minutes after the initial companies arrived.
