Excerpts from kmov.com: The tale starts in 1736 when Benjamin Franklin established the Union Fire Company. Fast forward to 1871, a similar-sounding Union Fire Company emerged in Centreville, Illinois, boasting 32 members. However, things get a bit murky here, as there was another town located just 10 miles south of Centreville that also decided to call itself Centreville. This naming confusion persisted for nearly half a century until the southern Centreville finally realized their predicament. In 1890, they opted to rename themselves Millstadt, while the Centreville Fire Department gradually transformed into the Millstadt Union Fire Company. Millstadt, a proud and historically rich town with German roots, has consistently maintained its fire department amidst the rise and fall of others. Today, the Union Fire Company of Millstadt proudly claims the title of the oldest continuously operating volunteer fire department in Illinois. Operations initially relied on hand-pumped equipment, wheeled hose reels, and leather buckets. These brave volunteers responded not only to fires but also to various emergencies. Currently, Millstadt Fire Chief Kurt Pellman manages 32 active volunteers, including his own son. While modern technology now includes pagers for rapid alerts, earlier methods were far simpler. "Back then, we'd sound the town sirens three times for a fire," Pellman reminisced. "A fourth blast meant everyone should gather." Among the dedicated volunteers is Ralph Schaefer, whose great-grandfather settled in the area in the 1870s. Robert Stumpf's family arrived from Germany in the 1840s; he has been serving since 1956, even holding the position of fire chief at one point. Butch Hettenhausen's ancestors moved to the region in the mid-1800s, dedicating much of his life to volunteering. "Older trucks used to carry boots," Pellman noted. "You hoped you grabbed the last pair. Breathing apparatuses were unheard of." Stumpf recalled, "We had two boots and three coats. Protection wasn't exactly top-notch." Covering 96 square miles of rural southern Illinois, the Union Fire Department serves a vast expanse. Over the years, they've enjoyed strong backing from their community. Millstadt remains a close-knit place where showing up for community events was mandatory—missing one could result in a fifty-cent fine. Missing a funeral procession? Forget about it!
