Solar Energy News: Solar Set For Post-Brexit Boost

The United Kingdom's tumultuous separation from the European Union might just end up being a boon for solar energy. As the renewable energy sector gears up to take advantage of the current instability in gas and oil markets, there's growing optimism that solar power could play a pivotal role in the country's energy future.

Currently, the UK relies heavily on importing traditional energy sources from within the EU. However, without any established energy transfer agreements between the UK and the continent post-Brexit, there are predictions of looming energy shortages and rising prices. According to Energy UK, the trade association, solar energy is poised to step in and bridge this gap. Lawrence Slade, Energy UK's CEO, emphasized that "a no-deal Brexit will have significant and negative consequences for the energy industry, potentially affecting customer bills."

Despite an initial 56% drop in investment in UK renewables following the Brexit vote—largely due to concerns over exporting energy and importing equipment—the outlook for solar remains optimistic. Initial setbacks haven't dampened enthusiasm as the sector braces itself for what's ahead.

Andrius Terskovas, from Sun Investment Group (SIG), one of Central-Eastern Europe's leading solar providers, expressed confidence in solar's potential. "Given the declining costs and increasing popularity of solar energy, the void left by disrupted energy transfers could be effectively filled by solar providers," he noted.

Regardless of whether the UK reaches a withdrawal agreement or faces a no-deal exit, the solar industry seems ready to capitalize on the situation. With energy prices expected to fluctuate, now is the time for consumers and businesses to consider locking in more stable rates.

John Elliott, CEO of energy switching service Make it Cheaper, echoed this sentiment: "Energy UK's report underscores the reasons behind potential price increases. It further reinforces the argument for securing long-term fixed-rate contracts now to avoid future volatility."

In 2018, energy switching hit a record high in the UK, with one in five consumers switching suppliers, according to another Energy UK release. This trend reflects a growing awareness among the public about managing energy costs effectively.

Environmental activism has also gained momentum, particularly in response to climate change. On April 15, 2018, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of London as part of what organizers dubbed a 'climate rebellion.' Extinction Rebellion, the movement behind the protests, is calling for urgent action to address the climate crisis, emphasizing biodiversity protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As the world moves toward cleaner energy solutions, joining the solar revolution could be both financially smart and environmentally responsible. Discover how you can save with Project Solar UK today and make a difference for tomorrow.
