It's been a great month for solar power - and for consumers

The prolonged spell of sunshine across the UK during April has set some remarkable records for solar power production while helping the nation maintain its longest stretch without coal-fired energy since the pre-industrial era.

Last week marked a significant milestone for solar energy, as it accounted for over 11% of the UK's energy mix. A new daily peak generation record of 9.68 gigawatts was achieved on April 20th, followed by a weekly generation record of 485.41 gigawatt-hours.

According to the Solar Trade Association (STA), these record-breaking levels of solar generation, supported by clear skies and cooler-than-average temperatures, have kept coal plants entirely offline since April 10th. Chris Hewett, the STA's chief executive, emphasized that solar power is pivotal in transitioning to a fossil-free energy grid, offering cleaner and more affordable electricity to British consumers. As the country moves toward net-zero emissions, solar energy will play an even bigger role in addressing rising energy costs, climate challenges, and environmental degradation.
