Mokena Fire Chief Howard Stephens Last Monday marked a special moment when the Mokena Village Board formally acknowledged Chief Howard Stephens for his decades of service. Known for his dedication and leadership, Stephens is set to step down on November 30th after a remarkable career. Stephens’ journey with the Mokena Fire Protection District began back in 1991 when he joined as a part-time firefighter. By 1995, he was among the first batch of full-time hires, quickly rising through the ranks. He became a lieutenant that same year, moved up to assistant fire chief in 2002, and finally took over as fire chief in 2012. Over the years, he’s been involved in various community initiatives and leadership roles, such as serving as vice-chair of the Will County Emergency Telephone Services Board and chairing the Will County Fire Chief’s Association Labor/Management Committee. He also holds a position at the Mokena Lions Club. The proclamation issued by the board highlighted his significant contributions. “Chief Stephens has built a lasting legacy of care, strong organizational structure, and unwavering support for everyone he’s worked with,†it stated. “His efforts have ensured the district remains equipped with top-notch resources that will continue to serve the community even after his departure.†During the ceremony, Mayor Sarah Johnson expressed her gratitude, saying, “Howard has been more than just a leader; he’s been a friend and mentor to many. His commitment to this village has always been evident, and we’re grateful for everything he’s done.†Stephens, visibly touched by the gesture, thanked everyone for their support over the years. “It’s been an incredible journey,†he said. “The friendships I’ve made here and the work we’ve accomplished together mean so much to me. I’m proud to leave this department in such capable hands.†As the village prepares for new leadership, residents are taking time to reflect on Chief Stephens’ impact and wishing him well in his retirement.
