Unison's new 660,000 torque electric pipe bender will help the Norwegian?lensv?g Westcon shipyard simplify and accelerate its production process.
This bespoke bender is the world's largest and most powerful thick-walled carbon steel pipe that can bend up to 10 inches (273 mm). A pipe bender, similar to that installed earlier last year but with a smaller bend diameter, will help Westcon shipyards to make ports from a single piece of steel pipe instead of using long sections to cut straight sections and purchase pre-formed bends from external suppliers.
Westcon, which serves fishing vessels and marine vessels as well as semi-submersible jack-up rigs, now intends to produce its own pipelines of almost all diameters. In order to meet any change requirements of the production process, the length of the steel pipe before the bending of the steel pipe is slightly longer. After cutting, the cut steel pipe is required to be re-measured to be cut to the final length and welded to the necessary flange. As a specialist in its development, Westcon intends to cut the steel pipe to a fixed length before the bending is completed in order to further improve the process.
Tommy Nilsen, head of prefabrication at Westcon's lensv?g plant, said: "We only used the first Unison bender for a few months, and we believe that adding this new bender will change the process steps. It is reported that the Unison bender is equipped with a servo motor driven motion axis and a fully automated software control mechanism. Both benders are equipped with Unison's innovative laser bounce system. The system automatically measures and adjusts the bend angle to compensate for the tendency of the tube to rebound slightly after bending. This tube bender is also equipped with a quick-change tooling system – a major advantage in one-off manufacturing.
