According to official reports from Beijing Business Daily and JD Power, the 2015 China Vehicle Reliability Study SM (VDS) shows that vehicle reliability has made great progress this year, close to the mature market level. The reliability improvement of independent brands is the most obvious, and the gap with international brands is getting smaller and smaller.
The JD Power Vehicle Reliability Study measures problems encountered by car owners during the past six months in the 37-48 month period, including eight problem categories (engine/shifting system, body appearance, driving experience, configuration/manipulation) 202 problem symptoms of /dashboard, audio/entertainment/navigation system, seat, air conditioning system and body interior). The overall reliability is measured by the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), and the lower the score, the better the quality.
China's overall vehicle reliability has improved, close to the mature market level: the average number of problems in 2015 was 156 PP100, which was reduced by 37 PP100 compared to 2014 (193 PP100). According to the country of origin of the brand, the independent brand has made the most progress, the number of problems has decreased by 48 PP100, and the engine/transmission system problem (16 PP100) accounts for nearly 60% of this gap.
Despite the significant improvement in vehicle reliability, fault-related issues remain a drawback in the Chinese market. Of the problems mentioned by US car owners, 33% are related to failures (the rest are design-related); among the problems mentioned by Chinese car owners, 55% of the problems are related to failures (the rest are design-related).
