Japan’s Kyodo News reported on September 9 that the plug-in hybrid version of the “Golf GTE†sold by Volkswagen can only travel up to 53.1 kilometers on a motor-only basis, with a suggested retail price of 4.99 million yen (about RMB 260,000). This is Volkswagen's first plug-in hybrid car in Japan.
BMW introduced the plug-in hybrid "xDrive40e" for the sport utility vehicle "X5", which can travel up to about 31 kilometers with motor power alone. The suggested retail price starts at 9.27 million yen.
The plug-in hybrid car does not emit exhaust gas when it is driven by electric power, and is powered by a gasoline engine after the battery is reduced in electric power. Compared with electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles have the advantage of strong endurance.
Among the plug-in hybrid cars produced by Japanese manufacturers, Mitsubishi's sports utility vehicle "Outlander PHEV" performed well and was the best-selling in Japan. Mitsubishi plans to launch a plug-in hybrid version of the small sport utility vehicle in FY2017. Toyota launched the "Prius PHV" in 2012.
Among the foreign car dealers, Mercedes-Benz sold the "S-class" high-end plug-in hybrid car in Japan in 2014, and this year will also launch the plug-in hybrid version of the "C-class" sedan. Audi and Volvo will also launch plug-in hybrids in Japan in the near future.
