During the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, China's tire renovation and utilization industry is expected to save over 5 million tons of rubber for the country. This amount represents approximately 30% of the total rubber consumption during the previous "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period. In addition, the industry will help conserve nearly 2 million tons of various resources, including petroleum, carbon black, nylon cords, and steel, with an estimated total value of up to 100 billion yuan. These figures were revealed at the fifth meeting of the fifth session of the China Tire Renovation Association on October 24th. According to reports, the production of used tires in China has been growing rapidly. In 2004, the country produced more than 112 million used tires, ranking second globally. It is projected that by 2010, this number will surpass 200 million. Meanwhile, China has become the world's largest consumer of rubber for three consecutive years. In 2004 alone, it consumed 4.35 million tons of rubber, accounting for 22% of global consumption. However, China faces a severe shortage of domestic rubber resources, with over 50% of its rubber being imported. A significant portion—60%—of the rubber consumed in China is used in tire manufacturing. Therefore, the full recycling of used tires plays a crucial role in addressing the country’s resource shortages, reducing environmental pollution, and promoting a more sustainable society. Currently, China employs several methods for recycling used tires, such as retreading old tires and producing rubber powder and reclaimed rubber. Retreading helps reduce the need for raw materials like rubber, carbon black, and steel cords. For example, replacing one old tire of size 9.00R20 can save 9 kg of rubber, 4 kg of carbon black, 3.4 kg of steel cord, 18 kg of petroleum, and 1.75 kg of steel. Rubber powder and reclaimed rubber can also be partially substituted for natural rubber in the production of new tires and other industrial products. Jiang Zhiyun, president of the China Tire Renovation and Utilization Association, stated that by 2010, tire retreading capacity is expected to rise from 8.5 million this year to 21 million units. The production of rubber powder is set to increase from 100,000 tons to 1 million tons, while reclaimed rubber output will grow from 1.25 million to 1.4 million tons. Over the five-year period, these efforts are projected to save more than 5 million tons of rubber, contributing significantly to national resource conservation and economic benefits. Adding the savings in other key resources, the overall value could reach an impressive 100 billion yuan.
