On the morning of August 10, 2011, the Maywood Fire Department was called to a four-story vacant building under renovation. Initial reports suggested an accident involving a torch near the cockloft of one of the five buildings in the complex. A second alarm was soon requested, and the fire escalated to a third alarm as it spread through the attic space, eventually collapsing parts of the roof.
The structure, made of brick with concrete floors, saw intense flames engulfing the upper levels. Firefighters from Maywood, along with mutual aid from Melrose Park, Westchester, Forest Park, and other surrounding departments, worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. Multiple engines, trucks, and ambulances were deployed, with master streams and hand lines being used strategically to combat the fire.
Photographers Dan McInerney, Larry Shapiro, and John Tulipano captured the scene from various angles, showing firefighters operating from aerial ladders, directing streams at the burning roof, and working to gain access to hidden fire areas. The fire remained contained to the original building, though heavy smoke and visible flames made for a dramatic and dangerous situation.
As the fire progressed, contractors on site reported the presence of several propane tanks and two Bobcat skid-steer loaders inside the building, prompting firefighters to exercise caution. Companies worked inside until the fire took control of the roof, forcing them to retreat and focus on defensive operations.
The fire was finally brought under control by midday, and crews remained on scene to ensure no embers remained. Several images from the event are available in galleries from both Dan McInerney and Larry Shapiro, offering a detailed look at the efforts made during this large-scale fire incident.
