The Lake Zurich Fire Department got an emergency call just after 5 PM on Monday regarding a fire at Midwest Motors, located at 540 Cortland Drive. When the first responders arrived, they noticed light smoke seeping from the roof's edges. However, as the situation worsened and the smoke became more intense, the initial response was escalated to a full-scale Box Alarm. The strip mall housed a spacious showroom filled with high-end and exotic used vehicles.
The fire originated on the second floor and spread into the attic area at the southern end of the sprinkler-equipped building. Despite the extent of the blaze, firefighting teams managed to confine it to that section of the structure, though significant water damage occurred throughout the building. Fortunately, while some cars sustained damage, most were successfully moved out of harm's way before the flames could reach them.
A variety of firefighting units were dispatched to the scene. Engines came from Lake Zurich (with four engines deployed), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside. Tower ladder trucks were provided by Wauconda and Arlington Heights, while squads were sent from Long Grove and Deerfield. Ambulances were available from Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville. Chief officers were present from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove.
Attached are several photos capturing different aspects of the firefighting effort. The first image shows the D side of the fire-damaged building, providing a clear view of the extent of the damage. Another photo highlights the setup of the Arlington Heights Tower 1, showcasing the strategic positioning of equipment. Further shots depict firefighters using a master stream from a tower ladder to tackle remaining flames, with particular focus on Wauconda firefighters' efforts. Other images include a close-up of the A-D corner where the bulk of the fire was concentrated, and another image captures the heroic work of Deerfield firefighters pushing a Viper out of the showroom to safety.
Additional photos show the ongoing overhaul process from various angles, including the use of the Arlington Heights tower ladder for continued operations. There are also images of Lake Zurich's four Pierce engines lined up, ready for action, along with both tower ladders being utilized for comprehensive overhaul tasks. One memorable shot features a Palatine intern receiving guidance on handling a fire hose, highlighting the training aspect amidst the chaos. Lastly, a McLaren sports car, one of the premium vehicles caught in the fire, is visible in one of the final images, serving as a stark reminder of the value of the inventory lost or saved during the incident.
A video documenting the entire event will be uploaded shortly. For those interested in viewing more visuals, here is a link to the complete gallery of images.
