Larry Shapiro sent this report: The Lake Zurich Fire Department got a call around 5 PM on Monday about a fire at Midwest Motors located at 540 Cortland Drive. When the first responders arrived, they noticed light smoke coming from the eaves of the building. However, as the situation worsened, the initial response was quickly upgraded to a full Box Alarm. The strip mall structure housed an expansive showroom filled with high-end and exotic used vehicles. The fire initially broke out on the second floor and spread into the attic area at the southern end of the sprinkler-equipped building. Despite the extent of the blaze, firefighting teams managed to confine it to that section of the property. Unfortunately, there was significant water damage throughout the building. While some of the cars sustained damage, many were successfully moved out of harm's way. Firefighting efforts involved multiple departments. Engines were dispatched from Lake Zurich (four units), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside. Tower ladder trucks were provided by Wauconda and Arlington Heights. Squads came from Long Grove and Deerfield, while ambulances were available from Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville. Chief officers were present from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove. Attached are several photos capturing different aspects of the incident. The first image shows the D side of the fire-affected building. Another photo highlights the setup of the Pierce tower ladder from Arlington Heights. There’s also a shot of firefighters using a master stream from the tower ladder to combat remaining flames. Wauconda’s tower ladder can be seen positioned in front of the building. Overhaul operations are visible on the D side in another image. The A-D corner, where most of the fire was concentrated, is captured in yet another photo. Additionally, you’ll find a picture of Deerfield firefighters assisting in pushing a Viper out of the showroom. There’s also an image showing firefighters working from the Arlington Heights tower ladder during the overhaul process. Three of Lake Zurich’s four Pierce engines are visible in one photo, while another captures both tower ladders being utilized for overhaul work. A Palatine intern receiving instructions on handling a hand line is featured in another shot. Lastly, a McLaren sports car—one of the valuable vehicles inside when the fire occurred—is showcased in a final image. I will upload a video later for a more comprehensive view of the event. For now, here’s a link to the complete gallery of images. This incident underscores the critical role of coordinated firefighting efforts in preserving both property and lives.
