May 8 news: Siemens Industry, Inc announced that it has received a contract from Dakota Creek Industries Inc. (DCI) to equip two US Navy General Marine Research Ships (AGOR) with its unique diesel-electric propulsion The total value of the order exceeds $10 million. The two research vessels will be designed by Seattle-based Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. (GPA).
It is reported that two advanced marine research vessels, AGOR 27 and 28, will be equipped with Siemens BlueTM multi-drive low-voltage system, which will greatly improve reliability and help shipowners reduce maintenance costs, increase efficiency and crew operability. The hull design will also reduce fuel consumption and pollution emissions.
The AGOR 27 and 28 are designed as single-hulled boats, approximately 238 feet long, each capable of boarding 20 crew members and 24 scientists. The construction of each ship is expected to take 30-36 months and is scheduled to be delivered to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Scripps Institution of Oceanography in late 2014 and early 2015, respectively, for scientific research in the Atlantic, Western Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.
