Candle Suspension

The candle suspension is a unique type of vehicle suspension system where the wheel moves vertically along the kingpin axis, which is fixed to the frame. This design ensures that the kingpin's alignment remains constant even when the suspension is compressed or extended. As a result, the wheelbase experiences only minor changes, contributing to improved steering and driving stability. This makes the candle suspension particularly effective in maintaining control and handling, especially during straight-line motion.

However, the candle suspension has some significant drawbacks. One major issue is that lateral forces generated during cornering are entirely absorbed by the kingpin sleeve, which can lead to increased friction and wear between the sleeve and the kingpin. Over time, this can reduce the lifespan of the components and affect overall performance. Due to these limitations, the candle suspension is rarely used in modern vehicles, as more advanced suspension systems have been developed to provide better handling, comfort, and durability.

Despite its decline in use, the candle suspension is still studied for its historical significance and the principles it demonstrates in suspension design. Understanding its strengths and weaknesses helps engineers develop more efficient and reliable suspension systems for today's vehicles.
