Open CNC and modern network manufacturing

ZF, a leading German automotive components supplier, and Continental AG have announced a joint venture to develop and manufacture hybrid drive systems for commercial vehicles. ZF will take the lead in integrating the hybrid system, which will be paired with lithium-ion batteries and electronic control systems provided by Continental. This collaboration aims to combine ZF's expertise in powertrain integration with Continental’s advanced battery technology. Continental stated that following this partnership, it plans to begin mass production of hybrid commercial vehicles in spring 2011. The initiative will leverage lithium-ion battery technology originally developed for the Mercedes S series, marking a significant step forward in sustainable transportation solutions. Since the end of last year, Continental has been ramping up its production of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid vehicles. Its Powertrain Systems Division invested over 3 million euros to set up a dedicated production line in Nuremberg. These batteries, incorporating hybrid technology, are already being installed as standard in the new Mercedes-Benz S400 Blue HYBRID. Thanks to its cutting-edge engineering, this six-cylinder luxury vehicle achieves an impressive fuel efficiency of 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers and emits just 190 grams of CO₂ per kilometer—setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly performance in the premium segment.
