In May, the automotive industry saw a slight decline in both production and sales compared to the previous month, yet maintained strong year-on-year growth. Total automobile production reached 581,100 units, reflecting a 15.31% drop from April but a robust 26.69% increase compared to the same period last year. Sales totaled 567,500 vehicles, down 15.67% month-over-month, but up 21.03% year-on-year. Among major vehicle categories, passenger cars led the market with 413,500 units produced and 393,600 units sold—both showing a 14% monthly decline but a significant rise of 35.93% and 24.08% respectively compared to May 2022. Commercial vehicles saw 176,600 units produced and 173,900 units sold, representing a 17.48% and 14.99% decrease from the prior month, though still up 8.49% and 14.64% year-on-year.
Passenger car production and sales declined across all types in May, with cross-type and sedan models experiencing the most noticeable drops. On the commercial vehicle side, overall production and sales remained weak, particularly for chassis models. Passenger chassis production and sales were at 16,500 and 16,200 units, down 11.34% and 12.86% from April, but up 27.30% and 27.49% year-on-year. Truck chassis saw 105,500 and 110,100 units produced and sold, down 17.90% and 14.78% from the previous month, yet up 1.26% and 10.52% year-on-year.
Among the top ten automakers by sales volume in May, FAW, SAIC, Dongfeng, Beiqi, Changan, Hafei, Chery, Guangzhou Automobile, Geely, and Brilliance collectively sold 477,300 units, accounting for 83.05% of total auto sales. SAIC led with 95,400 units sold, followed by FAW with 95,000, Dongfeng with 75,000, and Changan with 53,600.
From January to May, the top ten companies saw impressive growth. SAIC topped with 522,500 units sold, followed by FAW with 466,600, Dongfeng with 375,400, Changan with 317,000, BAIC with 291,300, Chery with 122,900, Hafei with 120,400, GAC with 103,800, Geely with 89,900, and Jianghuai with 77,900. The combined sales of these companies reached 2,491,700 units, making up 83.77% of total auto sales during this period.
