Types of water transport tariffs

Water transport tariffs can be categorized into different freight rates according to their scope of application, composition and mode of transport. There are two basic forms of freight: general freight rates and specific freight rates. According to the different modes of transportation, the freight rates can be divided into: direct freight rates, intermodal freight rates, and container freight rates. In addition, there are other methods of classification. Today we look at the detailed definition and classification of various tariffs!

First, according to the basic form of classification:

(1) Ordinary freight rate: It is applicable to the general cargo transportation and is the most basic part of the water freight rate. All kinds of uniform freight rates promulgated by national and local authorities are ordinary freight rates.

(2) Specific freight rates: The freight rates specified for a specific season, a specific route, or a specific type of freight, which is a supplement to the general freight rate. Can be higher or lower than the general tariff, use the difference between the specific tariff and the general tariff to limit or encourage certain transportation.

Second, according to the mode of transport:

(1) Direct freight rates: applicable to direct freight transportation between Hong Kong and Hong Kong. For example, the freight rates for direct transportation between ports on the north coast, between ports on the south China coast, and between the ports on the Yangtze River and the provinces. Some of the transcontinental areas are directly transported in terms of form. However, due to the different tariff rates in each area, they are not applicable to direct freight rates and are only applicable to route rates.

(2) Intermodal freight: It is applicable to the transport of goods in the form of water and land transport and Haijianghe combined transport. Generally, the freight rates of the railway and land and sea sections are priced by a uniform reduction rate.

(3) Container freight: It is applicable to container cargo transportation. Domestic container freight rates: According to the current domestic container specifications, there are two types of containers, international and non-international.

International standard 5-ton box: The actual volume is 9.5 cubic meters, and the billing volume is 7.6 cubic meters (accounting volume is about 80% of the actual volume).

Non-international standard 5-ton box: The actual volume is 8.1 cubic meters and the billing volume is 6.5 cubic meters; the 2-ton box is 5.9 cubic meters and 4.8 cubic meters respectively.

Third, according to the composition of the freight rate itself:

(1) Single tariff: That is, regardless of the length of transportation, there is only a single tariff rate. This tariff is generally only applicable to short-haul routes, ferries or certain straits.

(2) Mileage freight rate: The freight rate is calculated based on the mileage. The increase of the freight rate is proportional to the increase of the freight mileage. Before the end of 1983, such tariffs were implemented in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. At present, certain river navigation areas still use this tariff.

(3) Delivering a fare reduction: a freight rate system in which the freight rate per freight ton kilometer (tonnes per nautical mile) decreases gradually as the transport distance increases. Because the fixed costs that make up the transportation cost are not increased or decreased by the transport distance, the total transport cost will increase with the increase of the transport distance within a certain distance, but the increase will be smaller than the increase in the transport distance, reflected in the average The unit transportation cost per ton-kilometer (tonnes per nautical mile) is reduced, so the freight rate also decreases as the distance increases. However, this decline is not endless, but beyond a certain distance, the freight rate remains at a certain level. At present, China's coastal areas, the Yangtze River and other major navigation areas use this form of freight rates.

(4) Route tariff: applicable to the direct freight rate between two ports. The main difference between it and the regional air transportation tariff is that it is not limited by the navigation zone. As long as direct freight transportation between the two ports can be made, this type of freight rate can be used to set. For example, the direct freight rates (such as crossing the northern coast, the south coast of China, and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River) between the sea ports in the north (South China) and the main ports in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River may be applicable.
