Iron bolts come in grades such as 3.6, 4.6, 4.8, 5.6, 6.8, 8.8, 9.8, 10.9, and 12.9. Bolts rated at Grade 8.8 or higher are typically made from low carbon or carbon steel with heat treatment (quenching and tempering) and are known as high-strength bolts. Others are considered ordinary bolts. Stainless steel options include SUS201, SUS304, and SUS316. They are used with nuts to fasten two parts with holes.

Hex Head Bolts are designed for assembly into a hole. They meet SAE specifications and feature a washer face under the head and a chamfered point. Grade 9.8 has a higher tensile strength than Grade 8.8.
