A nyloc nut, also known as a nylon insert lock nut, polymer insert lock nut, or elastic stop nut, is a type of locking nut. It features a nylon collar that resists loosening by creating friction against the screw threads. The nylon insert is slightly smaller in inner diameter than the major diameter of the screw, causing it to compress elastically over the threads without cutting into them. This compression creates a locking force that keeps the nut in place. Nyloc nuts can maintain their locking ability up to 250°F (121°C).
There is some debate about whether they can be reused.
