My grandfather, Joe Salerno, turned 93 this month and spent a long time as the assistant fire marshal for the Cicero Fire Department. As a child, I grew up in the firehouse and remember the trucks that we used to name when visiting the firefighters. Here are some old black and white photos that capture those moments.

I have newspaper clippings with images of fires he helped fight. My grandfather started working in Cicero in 1954 and became assistant fire marshal in 1977. He saved many lives, including a baby who was thrown down from a third-floor building engulfed in flames. He still tells stories about those days like they happened yesterday. We all grew up around the firehouses and knew every firefighter, both young and old. Unfortunately, all of them have passed away, and now he's the last one left. Though he's still active and drives, I know his time is limited. He recently lost his wife, who was 92, after 70 years of marriage, and now he's alone, spending quiet days by himself. But when he talks about the fire department, his eyes light up.

My grandfather was a WWII veteran, serving in the Pacific during the time the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. After saving so many lives, I want to honor him by showing that his life made a difference. I believe that as we age, we often forget how much our lives impacted others. I hope these pictures can be added to the website so future generations can see the legacy he left behind. I'll send any photos I have for the site. On Christmas, I showed him your website, and we found the stations where he once worked. We saw the same firetrucks we used to take pictures of when we were kids. The firefighters were like a second family to us. He was thrilled to see the photos online, and that’s why I’m hoping to add more to the site, since the Cicero Fire Department archive hasn’t responded yet.

Shoe Care

When we tidy up the shoe cabinet at home, we may suddenly realize some shoes that you have forgotten. They have become yellow and old due to a lack of maintenance. But you can't bear to discard these once your best shoes, but you don't have a good way to repair them.

Leather shoe care refers to the cleaning, sterilization, maintenance, glazing, polishing, color supplement, mildew prevention and other care work of leather shoes to restore the beautiful and bright appearance of leather products and extend the service life of leather.

1. Clean your shoes regularly: Wipe off any dirt or debris with a soft cloth or brush. Use a damp cloth to remove any stains.
2. Use a shoe protector: Apply a waterproof or protective spray to your shoes to prevent damage from water, stains, and other elements.
3. Polish your shoes: Use Shoe Polish to restore the color and shine of your leather shoes. Apply a small amount of polish with a soft cloth and buff with a brush.
4. Store your shoes properly: Keep your shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use shoe trees to help maintain their shape.
5. Rotate your shoes: Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day. Give them a break and rotate them with other pairs to extend their lifespan.
