At just after 3 a.m. this morning, the Prospect Heights Fire and Police Departments were called to a serious traffic accident on Camp McDonald Road near Maple. Emergency responders arrived to find a single vehicle that had veered off the road, jumped the curb, and crashed into two trees and a mailbox before coming to rest in a yard. The force of the impact split the car into two pieces, but it stopped short of hitting the front of a nearby house.
Inside the vehicle were four teenagers. Three of them were thrown from the car upon impact and died instantly. The fourth was taken by ambulance to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment. Local authorities worked quickly to secure the scene, and the vehicle remained on-site for over 12 hours while recovery teams worked to clear the area.
The Chicago Tribune and the Daily Herald both covered the incident. You can read more about it through their reports.
Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene later that afternoon as the wreckage was being removed and captured several powerful images of the aftermath.
